BECOME A VOLUNTEER
Aojah seeks to aid the homeless in our local communities and we continue to work on rewarding causes such as our medical and education missions to the Caribbean. Your participation in AOJAH will help make a difference in the communities we serve.
The life blood of any non-profit is its volunteers and the same is true in many of the causes AOJAH strives to achieve. There will always be a need for volunteers and their diverse expertise. While many believe that help with the main cause is where volunteering is most needed, there are other areas where members and volunteers can be extremely valuable. For example, in our fundraising quests we will have such functions as golf tournaments, brunches, membership drives and more. Volunteers can play a big role in these events and in many instances bring fresh and inspiring new ideas to the different committees and taskforces within the organization.
If you would like to serve on any of our Committees or Task Forces please contact us using the form in the link below.
Medical
AOJAH conducted its first optometry medical mission in Grenada in 2024 and because of its overwhelming success we have decided to make it an annual event and expand the mission to include other medical services.
The mission will also continue to include the volunteer services of local Grenadian professionals so that we can be more closely integrated we the community we serve and be better prepared to provide the clinical services and training that is needed.
AOJAH conducted its first Medical Optometry Mission on the Caribbean island of Grenada in March of this year. The mission was an overwhelming success and was recognized by the island’s Prime Minister.
Over 1,200 people showed up to the clinic on the first day and some had to be turned away or rescheduled for later in the week. The team of 21 volunteers, representing the US and Grenada, examined and treated 1,222 patients in 4 days. We conducted diagnostic testing and exams, dispensed prescription and sun glasses, and eye medications, including one year’s worth of glaucoma medication for patients who required it. Special accommodations were made for children who suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia and others who had mental and physical disabilities.
One important observation resulting from the mission is that glaucoma is very prevalent on the island and our mission made a significant impact in terms of spotlighting the scope of the disease and delivering much needed healthcare services on the island. A summary report was provided to the island’s Ministry of Health.
AOJAH has committed to making the mission a yearly imitative in Grenada and broadening the services we provide to include cataract surgery and family practice. Planning is already underway for 2025.
